the idea
The Mission: The Human Gift acquires projects relating to nature, culture and sustainability that are under threat. We work with local people to further develop these projects. We are particularly interested in environmentally friendly tourism, organic farming, education, the conservation of protected areas, and cultural heritage.
Every project should
- be environmentally sustainable
- create local jobs
- promote education
- preserve cultural identity We are particularly keen to do this when there is a risk that ‘investors’ might take over the remaining parts of the project.
Examples
A small eco-diving lodge
with just five little cottages, situated on an island in South-East Asia in the middle of a wonderful reef, which was under threat of being taken over by a hotel chain because the founders had run out of money due to the coronavirus pandemic.
An organic spice plantation
in Central America that faces a similar fate. The plantation was due to be converted into a training centre for organic farmers. The project was put on hold due to the coronavirus and is now set to be sold to a hotel group.
Cultural Heritage
There is a threat here that the site will be demolished and replaced by massive hotel complexes, alongside a modern architectural ‘monument’ which, however, would block access to a nature reserve.
We could go on listing as many projects as we like – for example, a beautiful, large, unspoilt island, the size of Berlin, which a well-known online retail tycoon is currently planning to convert into his private residence, complete with a runway for an A380… but at some point, the individual investments become astronomically expensive; it’s a bit like playing Robin Hood, but legally, because we’re actually buying them.
What we do
Buy nature.
Protect nature.
Give nature as a gift.
The most beautiful places on Earth should not belong to the highest bidder, but to humanity.
We safeguard nature, culture and local livelihoods by taking over projects at risk before they are destroyed by short-term profit motives.
Not against capitalism. Rather: we use capital to preserve beauty.
- We “buy“ nature before it is destroyed; we preserve and protect it.
- We “buy“ cultural heritage before it is destroyed; we preserve and protect it.
- We promote local employment rather than exporting ‘“foreign management and exploitation“.
- We promote education and culture
About
us
We are a small team of internationally experienced individuals from the worlds of business and culture who are committed to the idea of ‘giving rather than owning’. The management team at head office works on a voluntary basis. Salaries are paid exclusively through active projects, whilst we provide our local staff in developing countries with above-average remuneration.
